I don't understand this insistence on so much technique when the student can barely read notes fluently. Technique can be revved up as the student progresses. I am very very careful not to bog the student down with too much technique. That way the "exercise" relates directly to the music being learned and is tailored to each student's particular needs. I will isolate two or three tricky measures and tell them to repeat them twenty times. I insist on scales and arpeggios.īut by and large, I try to find the "exercise" in the actual music the student is playing. The exercises are terrific for dexterity and even beginners can handle them easily because they are patterns and don't require note-reading skills. But they are pleasant to the ear and most students enjoy them. I'm nowhere near the level necessary to play it, but I do use several measures from the Allegro as scale practice.Czerny wrote some very attractive "exercises" which are much more appealing than Schmitt, Pischna or Plaidy which to my mind are "student enthusiasm dampers".Ĭzerny's Opus 261 is much easier than the Opus 365. 2 Sonata makes for some good technical practice. Take a look at the following sets, that line up nicely with the 599-849-299 range of difficulty: It's good to mix them with something that, while still serving the technical purpose, feels like proper repertoire. You'll see people dismissing everything by Czerny as worthless, you'll see people recommending that you go through the whole 599-299-740 route. That said, there's a lot of good studies in there. They often lack the musicality of other study sets, and the sheer number of them makes going through the whole books seem a waste of time. Let me start by saying that, while I appreciate and use the Czerny studies, they work great as supplements, not as a method.
